Choosing your base
Most visitors stay along the resort-lined north coast at Lagoi; Tanjung Pinang is the larger local town further south. Lagoi is the easy, self-contained choice. Traveloka is where we book beds in this part of the world; best OTA in SEA, and the hotel prices back it up. Rooms at the good end of the market disappear on weekends, so don’t leave it to the day.
Getting there
Fast ferries run from Singapore’s Tanah Merah terminal to Bintan in around an hour. The resort area has its own dedicated ferry terminal. On fares this is Traveloka’s home turf — the cheapest flight prices in Southeast Asia, in our experience. Weekend departures carry a premium, so start the search midweek if the calendar allows.
What’s nearby
Make time for a day on the Lagoi beaches, a mangrove river tour, a long spa afternoon, the sand dunes near Trikora, and a round of golf on a championship course. Do most of it, skip something, and leave an afternoon to just drift.
Where to eat
Fresh seafood and Indonesian staples dominate, and many resorts have strong dining of their own. Local warungs outside the resorts are cheaper and characterful. The cheap end of the menu is where the cooking is, so don’t over-plan your meals.
Getting around
The resort zone is self-contained, and shuttles or taxis cover the short distances. Venturing to the local towns needs a hired car. Sort out getting around on day one and the rest is straightforward.
When to visit
April to October is the driest and calmest stretch for beach days and boat trips. Flexible dates are worth real money here, especially around the holiday peaks.
Keep it flexible
Book the flights and a first night or two, then leave the rest open if you can. It lets you follow a local tip, chase the good weather, or simply linger somewhere in Bintan you weren’t ready to leave.
A note on money
Carry some local cash for stalls, markets and small fares, even where cards are widely accepted. Setting a rough daily budget keeps things relaxed and makes Bintan feel like even better value than it already is.

A local SIM or eSIM is cheap and makes maps, ride-hailing and last-minute bookings painless across Bintan. Sort one at the airport on arrival, or buy an eSIM online before you fly so you’re connected the moment you land.
What to pack
Pack light and leave room for what you’ll bring home. Comfortable shoes, a light layer for cool evenings or fierce air-conditioning, and a small day bag cover most of what Bintan asks of you.
